How to Use the Navigation Bar

placeholder

On the right side of the screen is a narrow bar. It seems to have a bead on it. It is showing how far down on a page or document you are.

If you click before the bead it moves closer to the start. If you click after the bead you move closer to the end.

You can click anywhere on this bar to move through the document more quickly than by scrolling.

If you put two fingers on the trackpad and move your fingers towards the keyboard you move down towards the end of the document, if you move your fingers towards yourself, you move to the beginning of the document.

How to Use the Menu Bar

A menu bar is like a restaurant menu giving you options. At the the top of your screen are a few words, the name of the program and beside it File, Edit, Format, View, Window, Help. These are section titles. Go to highlight each one. At each word a mini page drops down with more choices. Go to edit. Down on the list is copy. Remember where this is. We’ll come back to it.

How to Highlight

Highlighting is like running a yellow highlighter over a printed page. It is different because when you highlight digitally you can copy or cut the text (letter, word, sentence, paragraph or page).

Where you click, the cursor is. Push down the mousepad but don’t let it up. Pull your cursor across the writing (text). It should change colour. Let the trackpad click up.

How to Copy

Move the cursor to the top of the screen. In the menu bar click down on the one called Edit and slide down to the word Copy.

If you lose the highlighting, go back to the words you want to copy then up to the menu and try again. It won’t let you copy if you have dropped the highlighting.

Other ways to do this is to highlight a word by double clicking a word and it will select it. Highlight this way or highlight a few words, then click Command & C at the same time. (Command is the key on the bottom left with a ⌘ symbol on it)

How to Paste

Once you have something copied push return twice (a key on far right of keyboard) so you can see clearly where you are pasting. Or you can paste it anywhere in the document you want. Move the cursor to the place click there.

Go back to the menu bar and go to edit. Choose paste which is right under it. What you copied should appear. Another way to paste is the shortcut of Command and V at the same time.

You can paste the same thing many times from one copy. Each time you copy the computer loses the copy of what was before this one.

How to Undo an Oops

If you make a mistake in pasting you can

1) press Command and Z at the same time or

2) go to the menu and Edit and click Undo there.

Or to remove something you can

1) highlight and press delete or

2) click to the end of what you want to delete and press delete for each character

How to Replace Text

If you want to replace one text with another you can highlight the unwanted text and type over it. Or you can copy the text you want and then highlight the text you don’t want and paste over the unwanted part.

How to do Capital Letters

A key on the left called caps lock has a light. If the light is lit IT WILL BE ALL CAPS. Click it again and it becomes lower case.  You will want to avoid writing sentences in upper case because it is yelling in type. It can suggest you are furious and rude.
